How can I tell when my drain field is malfunctioning?

 

• When there are odors, persistent wet spots and/or lush growth of grass in the area of your field.

• Your plumbing drain becomes sluggish when used heavily or during wet weather.

• Problems continue even though the septic tank has been recently pumped out.

• How often do they septic tanks get pumped?

 

To extend the life of your system:

DO NOT

• use a garbage disposal!

• pour grease and oils down the drain.

• have your water softener regeneration discharge to the mound or conventional system.

• build patios, driveways, house additions, etc., over the tank or leach field. Verify location before starting projects.

• discharge drain gutters, patio drains, and foundation perimeter drains over leach fields.

• plant trees which require and seek great amounts of water of the leach field.

• use commercial septic tank additives. None have been proven beneficial to the septic system and some may hurt your system in the long run.

• use your toilet as a trash can by dumping non-degradables (candy wrappers, sanitary napkins, coffee grounds, etc.) down your toilet or drains.

DO

• have your septic tank(s) pumped when recommended.

• take left over hazardous household chemicals to an approved County/City hazardous waste collection center for disposal. Don't poison your septic system and the ground water by pouring harmful chemicals down the drain.

 

 

When does my septic system get pumped?

The following schedule can be used as a "guide" as to when your septic system will be pumped, it may change. Pumping usually occurs around the 3rd week in September and is finished by the 2nd week in October. A notice will be sent to homeowner's ahead of the pumping so you are aware.
